Growth of Technology is beneficial for everyone but it is not often that a technological advancement in a different field ends up being useful for Medical Purposes. 3D Printing is once such tech. Hospital Sant Joan de Deu in Spain was able to remove a tricky cancer from a 5-year thanks to 3D Printed Organs.
Hospital Sant Joan de Deu had a 5-year old patient diagnosed with a common form of cancer in children that typically occurs around the stomach.
The difficult part was to remove the cancer. Doctors had attempted two surgeries but were unable to remove the cancer due to its locations. The Spanish doctors then turned to the CIM Foundation at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia to create a 3D-printed replica of the boy's tumor so they could perfect their technique ahead of the surgery. The doctors also got a tumor free version of the stomach 3d printed to see how the stomach would look after the surgery.
Surgeons practiced for 1 week before the scheduled surgery and were successfully able to remove the tumor from the child. The credit, ofcourse, goes to the 3d Printed organs. The child will require no additional surgeries and will recover fully.
